Continuing our Series on Loreto, MX

We have a week coming up in Loreto early October of 2026.  We will be at the Villa Del Palmar at the islands of Loreto AT DANZANTE BAY.

Previous visits to the resort were March of 2025,  September of 2023, October of 2022,  June of 2020, December of 2018.

So the big question is how do you get from the airport to your resort.  If you are staying at one of the hotels in the downtown area;  would suggest you take a taxi.

Here’s a detailed breakdown of the taxi rates and process:  Keep in mind that the rates are subject to change over time and with the swing in exchange rates.

The Official System: Fixed-Rate Taxis from LTO

Upon exiting the baggage claim area, you will see an official taxi booth (usually labeled "Taxi" or "Transportación Terrestre"). You MUST purchase a ticket here before exiting the building. Do NOT negotiate with drivers outside; the rate is set and pre-paid.

Key Points:

  • Destination-Based Zones: The fare is a fixed price based on your destination zone (e.g., downtown, a specific hotel, a beach club).

  • Per Vehicle, Not Per Person: The price is for the entire taxi (up to 4 passengers typically), not per person.

  • Pay at the Booth: You pay cash (Mexican Pesos or sometimes US Dollars, but pesos are preferred and often get a better rate) at the booth, receive a ticket, and hand it to the driver waiting in the designated line.

  • Current Rates (Approximate - Early 2024):

    • To Downtown Loreto (El Centro, Main Square, most downtown hotels): $250 - $300 MXN (~$15 - $18 USD).

    • To Loreto Bay / Nopoló Area (Inn at Loreto Bay, Posada de las Flores, etc.): $300 - $350 MXN (~$18 - $21 USD).

    • To La Misión / Miramar Area (La Misión Hotel, etc.): $250 - $300 MXN.

    • To Puerto Loreto (marina area): $350 - $400 MXN.

    • To Juncalito Beach (south of town): $500 - $600 MXN or more.

    • To Agua Viva / Ensenada Blanca (further south): $800 - $1,000+ MXN.

⚠️ Important: These are estimates. Always confirm the exact price at the official booth before paying. Prices can change with fuel costs and inflation.

Alternative Options from Loreto Airport

  1. Private Airport Transfer / Shuttle Service:

    • Best for groups or peace of mind. You can pre-book online with companies like Loreto VIP or through your hotel. A driver will meet you with a sign.

    • Cost: Similar to or slightly higher than a taxi, but fixed in advance. For example, a private van for 4-8 people might be $40-$60 USD total.

    • Advantage: Reliable, often with English contact, and can include a stop at a store (like a supermarket).

  2. Rental Car:

    • Highly recommended if you plan to explore beyond Loreto (mission trails, beaches, snorkeling at Coronado Island, etc.). The main agencies (Hertz, Europcar, etc.) have desks inside the airport terminal.

    • Cost: Varies widely by season and vehicle type, but expect ~$40 - $80 USD per day.

  3. Hotel Shuttle:

    • Some hotels, especially larger resorts in the Nopoló/Loreto Bay area, offer complimentary or paid shuttle service. You must arrange this in advance by contacting your hotel directly.

Summary & Tips for Your Arrival:

  • Have Mexican Pesos for the taxi booth for the best rate. USD may be accepted but often at a less favorable exchange rate.

  • Go to the official taxi booth inside the terminal before walking outside.

  • Know your destination (hotel name or area) to get the correct zone price.

  • For the return trip to the airport, you can ask your hotel to call a regular city taxi. The fare back is usually similar to or slightly less than the airport fare but is negotiable (ask for the rate before getting in). Expect to pay around $200-$250 MXN from downtown.

  • Tipping is not mandatory but appreciated; round up or add 10-15% for good service.
