Buying Airmiles
BUYING AIRMILES
We have had several people ask if they should buy airmiles from there airline. Usually is is because they are short of the miles needed for a flight they are planning on.
The short answer is no!!
Here is why. Lets say you want to make a round trip from Portland Oregon to Orlando, Florida. You have checked flight on Google Flights and found a flight on Alaska Airlines for $389.00 for a Saver booking. Then you checked the Alaska web site you found the same flight available for 39,000 points plus $12.00. Picture each mile being worth a penny. So its about a push as to whether you pay cash of use miles.
But you Check your available miles and find you only have 27,000 miles. That means you need an additional 12,000 miles. You can buy the 12,000 from Alaska for $288. That would be insane.
