It has been many years since we were in Cancun. Many of the memories of this vacation are filed away in long term memory. There are a few things that I do recall. First is the Mexican Fiesta. I would recommend no scheduling anything for the day after a Mexican Fiesta. We had scheduled a trip by bus to Chicken Itza with a stop for snorkeling on the way back.
Well the Mexican Fiesta was a lot of fun. The food was great and so was the entertainment. The problem was that the tilt your head back an pore in tequila. Granted, the tequila is diluted, but when you add that to a lot of margaritas and a few beer before leaving the hotel .. well the next day was tough. It would have been a good day to sleep in and recover around the pool.

First Real Vacation
The first real vacation that my wife and I took goes back 20 plus years. I had signed up for a program where you paid so much per month and at the end of the year you were entitled to a weeks stay at one of several locations. Well the the year went by and it appeared that the company was not going to be around much longer. So we quickly made our reservation for Cancun, Mexico.
Our flight had an overnight stop at DFW. ( Dallas- Fort Worth). This turned out to be great. At the time we lived in Stockton, California. While driving to the airport in Sacramento we realized we had left our passports on the kitchen table. Had we gone back to get them we would have missed out flight. So we called a good friend who went to our house, collected our passports and drove them up to the airport. The airline put them on the next flight for DFW and we picked them up late that evening. ( Back then the airline did this for free; today I'm sure there would be some sort of charge.)
The next Morning we flew on to Cancun.

Moving On .. Boomers love to Travel
OK!! So camping was fun. Now what do we do?
How about cruising. Playing in the sun. Going to exotic locations like Egypt, India, and even Viet Nam. How can we afford to do the things we always wanted to do? How do we stretch our dollar so we can have more vacations?
We will be posting some of our ideas. But we do not have all the answers .. got some tips .. jump in there and share.
Whats coming. Cruising, Frequent Flier Miles, Favorite places, Timeshares and lots more.

A Few reflections of the good old days.
I need to mention a few reflections of those good old days before moving on. There was the time that the tent stakes did not make the trip. Sleeping bags were laid directly on a flattened tent. Or the time the Blazer got stuck in a mud hole at 11:00 at night. I remember my wife quietly telling the kids; ' don't say a thing'.
It seems that camping became more popular through the years. And as it become more popular the camping experience changed. At first you could find a spot with nobody else within miles. Finally it reached a point when you were sharing a tent stake with your neighbor.
And even the camping era can be sub divided. There was the sleep on the ground phase. ( Very short ). Then came the sleeping bag phase. Then the Air Mattress Phase. And the final phase is the talk about it phase. That's when you talk about camping a lot; but spend much more actual time at a Bed and Breakfast.
We still camp. But now we have all the comforts of home in our travel trailer.
But this blogg is not about camping .. it's about travel.

Remember when camping was all you could afford?
I can remember when camping was all we could afford in the way of vacations. Those were the good old days. Worked all week leading up to a three day weekend and we are ready to go. Get home for a bit to eat and then it's time to load the car. We had an Olds Ciera back then. Two adults, two teenagers, a German Sheppard and all that camping gear. The inside of the car was full. The trunk filled up pretty fast. The rest goes up on the roof rack. Final get on the road about 7:30 or 8:00 looking like something out of the 'Grapes of Wrath'.
Then comes the two and a half hour drive to our favorite camping spot. Then comes setting up camp in the dark. No fire the first night. Too dark to gather wood and two tired to stay up anyway.
Yes Sir .. those were the good old days!
